Counties in Eastern Tennessee

For those wanting to have an easy reference to the locations (and county records) in Eastern Tennessee, here is a nice map that I use. It will actually link you to the GenWeb sites for each county.
Linkable map of Eastern Tennessee.

The Lockes initially moved into Meigs County from South Carolina. Meigs County is located between Chattanooga and Knoxville along the Tennessee River and was Cherokee country. It was also the origin of the infamous "Trail of Tears". In the 1860 census, Josiah and Elizabeth lived in the area called Limestone Post Office west of Cleveland TN.

The children of Josiah later moved to the Jasper area of Marion County, just west of Chattanooga. McMinn and Bradley counties as well as Hamilton County are also locations with family ties.

David and Kristin, I am confused... a state not uncommon for me, unfortunatly... The family records I have show the mother of Josiah Locke as Mary Hunter not Mary Culp. jan

Jan-
Mary Culp is the correct mother. They are not the same person. Someone did work that has it being Mary Hunter, which is incorrect. Mary Hunter is actually married to Jesse Locke as well (although that's a disaster too!!).
If you look at the "Mary Culp" blog post, it quotes the LWT & probate/land conveyance records that have Mary Culp Reeves married to Joseph Locke in 1837. According to implications of the ages of the kids, Joseph & Mary Culp would have married around 1822. Since Joseph doesn't appear before 1830 in the censuses, my guess is he was not married yet before Mary Culp. It is also safe to assume that Mary Culp is still the wife of Joseph when they moved to TN b/c 2 of her daughters from her 1st marriage move with them. I doubt this would have happened if she had already died, etc.

There is a slight possibility that Mary Culp could have died & Joseph remarried Mary Hunter, but I doubt it. I've checked the Meigs, TN records & can't see any mention of it.
There's also the issue that there is family stories saying that Mary Hunter was the wife of Jesse Locke. But that too is a problem since the story says Mary Hunter was killed by Union soldiers. But if this is true then they must have recently been married b/c a Agnes Nancy is listed as Jesse's wife in the 1850 & 1860 census.

So in short, I have no clue why anyone thinks Mary Hunter is married to Joseph. If you have any real evidence I would love to get a hold of it just so I can try to reconcile it with all these other things.
